The Garden City High School Astronomy Club along with the Garden CityRecreation Commission has planned an astronomy observation session for Tuesday,June 5, 2012. The group will be setting up telescopes at 4:00 p.m. at therecreation area on Sagebrush Road,one mile west of the US83 intersection. The observation sessionwill be viewing Venus that willbegin a transition of the sun’s disk beginning at 5:09 p.m. This eventwill not occur again until the year 2117. The transition will continueuntil sunset, after which the group will observe Saturn, Mars, and thefull moon.
The astronomy group has telescopes that will be set upduring the observation session. The group will have a telescope with asafe solar filter for the observation session. You are not to lookdirectly at the sun without proper equipment or you could damage yoursight.
If the weather is bad, or if the sky is over 50% overcast, the sessionwill be automatically cancelled. Call the Garden City Recreation Commission’s Hotlineat 276-1202 for cancellation updates.
