(Garden City, KS) (westernkansasnews.com) Finney County Commissioners pored over the proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year when they met Monday. Various department heads presented their proposed budgets for Commissioners to consider in advance of the new fiscal year that starts in July. One of the biggest department budgets in the county is the Sheriff’s department with 95 fulltime employees and a proposed budget of approximately $5.8-million. Sheriff Kevin Bascue along with various other department managers is seeking a 4-percent increase in paid performance pay for employees. Bascue told Commissioners that the goal is to retain quality workers and not lose them to competing agencies or the private sector.
Commissioners also approved the annexation of 4.2-acres of private property in the county into Garden City. The parcel’s property owners, Kansas Lodging LLC, requested the annexation in advance of developing the property for a major motel chain. The county’s coffers will still glean property tax from the property owners and the area is already equipped with city infrastructure.
