Garden City Police Chief James Hawkins appeared before City Commissioners recently as civic leaders continue to chip away at the budget process. Garden City Police patrol streets in a variety of modes of transportation that include: SUV style vehicles, patrol cars, bicycles, and motorcycles. Hawkins says there are four fulltime motorcycle patrol officers and the department has the ability and equipment to accommodate six in total.
Garden City Police currently use Kawasaki brand motorcycles that are fully equipped with the electronic equipment an officer needs to get the job done. The current fleet of six was purchased used about a decade ago. Hawkins says that he is probing the possibility of replacing the current police motorcycles with new ones from Harley Davidson. He adds that he’ll pursue federal grant money to make the purchase before going to Commissioners with a proposal.
