The Garden City Community College Information Services and Publications Office publishes this calendar of events near the beginning of each month in an effort to assist local and area news media professionals in keeping track of, and covering, various campus-based and other public events. New events, details and changes may in some cases be determined after publication of the calendar. This calendar does not necessarily include all workshops, classes, seminars, events and athletic competition.

 

JULY 2

Opening day of third session summer semester classes in EduKan, the Internet community college operated by GCCC and five partner institutions. Information and enrollment available at edukan.org.

 

JULY 4

GCCC classes and campus closed in observance of Independence Day. Normal hours resume July 5.

 

JULY 5

Regular summer hours resume after Independence Day on GCCC campus, including 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m.-noon Fridays, with reception desk at Student and Community Services Center open 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m.-noon Fridays.

 

JULY 9

Fifth of five GCCC Fall Enrollment Days, offering advance registration, placement testing and orientation for recent high school graduates and others planning to start classes in the 2012 fall term.  Activities begin with 8 a.m. registration and conclude approximately 2:30-3 p.m. Day includes drawing for two $250 scholarships. Parents welcome with enrolling students.  Reservations necessary, 620-276-9608.

 

JULY 10

Opening day for GCCC Business and Community Education Department short-term credit course, Introduction to Accounting, meeting noon-4 p.m. July 10, 12, 24 and 26. Registration also available on top floor of GCCC Student and Community Services Center.

 

JULY 11

Monthly meeting of GCCC Board of Trustees, 6 p.m. in the Endowment Room, Beth Tedrow Student Center, following dinner at 5 p.m. in adjacent Broncbuster Room. All meetings of GCCC governing body open to public.

 

JULY 16-19

Concluding summer sessions of 11th Annual GCCC Kids’ College series of fun and learning activities, including My Passport, 8-11:30 a.m. for grades K-6; and Journey of Discovery, 12:30-4 p.m. for grades K-6, sponsored by GCCC Business and Community Education Department. JULY 20

Final day of main session classes in 2012 GCCC summer semester. Fall semester classes begin Aug. 22, with enrollment assistance available in advance all summer 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m.-Noon Fridays. Enrollment information available from GCCC Admissions, 620-276-9608.

 

JULY 23

Opening day for GCCC Business and Community Education Department short-term credit course, Fast Track Career Skills, meeting 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. July 23, 24, 25 and 26.   Information and registration available at 620-276-9647,www.gcccks.edu/businessandcommunity orbiz@gcccks.edu. JULY 23-25

GCCC Student Athletic Training Camp, co-sponsored by Sandhill Orthopaedic and Sportsmedicine for high school and college students, coaches and school nurses, with check-in 11 a.m. July 23 and activities through noon July 25. Cost $220 overnight/$170 day camp.  Information and registration 620-276-9617.

 

AUG. 6

Opening day for GCCC Business and Community Education Department short-term credit course, Supervisor I, meeting 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Aug 6, 7, 8 and 9.  Information and registration available at 620-276-9647, www.gcccks.edu/businessandcommunity or biz@gcccks.edu. AUG. 8

Monthly meeting of GCCC Board of Trustees, 6 p.m. in the Endowment Room, Beth Tedrow Student Center, including 2012-2013 budget hearing, following dinner at 5 p.m. in adjacent Broncbuster Room.  All meetings of GCCC governing body open to public. Meeting to be immediately followed by board’s annual policy governance retreat.

 

AUG. 13

Regular fall semester hours resume on GCCC campus, including 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, with reception desk at Student and Community Services Center open 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Fridays.

 

AUG. 15

GCCC faculty personnel return for fall semester. Division-Department Day across campus.

 

AUG. 17

GCCC Fall Semester Faculty and Staff Inservice. Limited enrollment assistance at Student and Community Services Center.

 

AUG. 20

GCCC Orientation/Assessment Day, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

 

Opening day of first 2012 fall semester class session in EduKan, the Internet community college operated by six partner institutions, including GCCC. Registration and information available at www.edukan.org.  Session concludes Dec. 7. Subsequent sessions Sept. 17-Dec. 7, Oct. 15-Dec. 7 and Dec. 10-Jan. 4.

 

Kansas Concealed Carry class for citizens seeking licensure to carry concealed firearms, 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m., co-sponsored by GCCC Public Safety Department and Sand and Sage Rifle and Pistol Club.  Information and advance registration, 620-276-9629. Cost, $125 per person.  Class also offered Aug. 25, Sept. 22, Oct. 27 and Dec. 1.
