Recipes wanted! The Finney County RSVP is preparing a taste-tempting custom cookbook featuring favorite recipes from community members. The goal is 500 recipes representing the diversity of this community. Submit your three favorite recipes to Finney County RSVP, 907 N 10th Street or e-mail them to 

2 Cat Canyon Groundbreaking – Will be held at 12:15pm at Lee Richardson Zoo at the Cat Canyon Site, near the Wild Asia parking lot. Refreshments will be served, for more information call 620-276-6243.    

3 A Kansas Small Business Forum – “Spotlight on New Kansas Tax Policy,” 11:30am – 1pm. in the lecture hall, Warren Fouse Science and Math Building, sponsored by the Garden City Area Chamber of Commerce, featuring Kansas Budget Director Steve Anderson. 4 Downtown Sidewalk Sale – Is located Downtown Main Street, from 7am – 3pm.  

4 Rummage Sale – Miles of Smiles Therapeutic Horsemanship is having a Charity Rummage Sale, (donations can be dropped off at 901 W Maple SE corner of the indoor arena.) 

8 Shoplifting Prevention Seminar – The Garden City Downtown Vision, in cooperation with the Garden City Police Department, is offering a shoplifting prevention seminar at 8am in the Downtown Vision office. The class will run about 1.5 hours and is free to Vision members, and $10 for non-members, seminar includes refreshments and materials. For more information or to sign up call 276-0891.

8-12 Southwest Kansas Pro-Am – Is looking for families to host Southwest Kansas Pro-Am professionals the during the 33rd Annual Southwest Kansas Pro-Am. Host families will receive tickets to the dinners August 10 and 11 at the Golf Club at Southwind. All proceeds from the Southwest Kansas Pro-Am benefit the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at St. Catherine Hospital. For more information please contact Beth Koksal at 620-272-2530 or 620-290-1452.

10 Ladies Luncheon & Fashion Show – The Southwest Kansas Pro-Am is having a Ladies Luncheon & Fashion Show at 11:30am at the Clarion Inn & Convention Center. All proceeds from the Southwest Kansas Pro-Am will benefit the Stephen Meyers Newborn Intensive Care Unit & Maternal Child Center  at St. Catherine Hospital. Tickets are $30 each and are available at Little Britches/Moodz, Bling, Clarion Inn, Baker Boot Company, The Buckle, Porter’s Flowers and Gifts, and the Gift Nook at St. Catherine Hospital.    10 Relay for Life –

11 Softball Tournament – The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Finney and Kearney Counties’ Co-ed Guns, Hoses and, Stretchers Softball Tournament is at Peebles Complex. It is $30 per person to enter, 3 game guarantee. This tournament features the men and women of the local Police Dept, Sheriff’s Dept, Fire Dept, and EMS. 15 Mexican Fiesta Scholarship Pageant –  Entries for the 2012 Fiesta Scholarship Pageant, sponsored by Fort Hays State University, are now being accepted by the Garden City Community Mexican Fiesta Committee. Deadline for applications is August 15 and the pageant takes place on Friday, September 7 and the Fiesta! Celebration is slated for Saturday, September 8 beginning with a parade at 10am. 15 FallFest – The FallFest 2012 featuring Art in the Park and Knights of Columbus Oktoberfest will be held at Stevens Park from 8:30am to 3pm. 15 Mercer Gallery – Opening date for the Ron Smith Exhibition, inaugural art show of the 2012-2013 season in Mercer Gallery, featuring wall sculptures inspired by Native American imagery and spirituality. Public viewing available 11am – 4pm Monday through Friday and 10am – 2pm Saturdays through Sept. 1. Mercer Gallery is located in the west wing, Pauling Joyce Fine Arts Building, Admission Free.

16 Chamber Annual Banquet – 

The Garden City Area Chamber of Commerce presents comedian Henry Cho. Event will be held at the New Garden City High School Auditorium, doors open at 7:30pm, show starts at 8:00pm. Tickets are $20 each and are available at the Chamber Office, Baker Boot and the Crazy House.   




20 Kansas Concealed Carry class – For citizens seeking licensure to carry concealed firearms, 7:30am-6pm,  this event is co-sponsored by GCCC Public Safety Department and Sand  and Sage Rifle and Pistol Club. Information and advance registration,  620-276-9629. Cost , $125 per person. Class is also offered Aug. 25,  Sept. 22, Oct. 27 and Dec. 1.  

25 5K Run/Walk – The 1st Annual Chachi Day 5K Run/Walk will be held at the Chachi’s Place in Deerfield, KS. Along with the 5k Run/Walk the day will consist of Breakfast, Silent Auction items, 3on3 Basketball, Dart Tournament, Pool Tournament, Chachi Tattoo’s, Bolo Golf, Water Sprinklers, Lunch and Swimming. 25-26  Tumbleweed Festival – Come enjoy music, crafts, food and fun at this year’s Tumbleweed Festival! Located on the West Green of Lee Richardson Zoo. Festival Kick-Off Night Aug. 24, 5:30-9:00pm, Saturday 10am-8pm and Sunday 1pm-7pm. 28 Sign up for Scouting – The Girls Scouts of Kansas Heartland and the Boy Scouts of America will be holding a Sign up for Scouting from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the Methodist Church in Fellowship Hall. Boys from 1st -12th grade and girls from K-12th grade can all come to sign up to be a part of Scouting. There is a place for every child and volunteers are always welcome!

September 6 Chamber Annual Golf Tournament – Held at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course, those interested in forming a team for the tournament, please contact the Chamber office no later than September 1   

September 11 Finney County Job Fair – Come to the Finney County Job Fair from 12:00pm to 6:00pm at the Clarion Inn . This annual event strives to accommodate Finney County employers with an affordable and local venue in which they may promote job openings and recruit employees through face-to-face interactions. For more information on this event or if your company would like to take advantage of this great opportunity to reach hundreds of qualified job seekers, contact Sandra Garcia, Office Manager at the Finney County Economic Development Corporation at 620-271-0388. You must complete a registration letter and have your booth fee in by  August 31.    The Convention and Visitors Bureau will be holding a Business Building Expo in conjunction with the Finney County Job Fair. The Expo will be held as a way to showcase your media outlet. This is a good opportunity to make your business available and accessible to other businesses in the community. 

September 29 Garden City Gauntlet – Garden City’s very own obstacle/adventure race, the course is roughly 5k and comes complete with obstacles to test your physical and mental strength. Obstacles will not be revealed until race day, but come prepared to climb, jump, crawl, and of course… Run! Waves begin at 2:00pm, event begins and ends in the southeast parking lot of the Finney County Expo Center. Fee’s are as follows, $70 until August 15, $80 until September 15 and $90 up until Race day. Awards presented to top finishers, and prizes given for creative  race day attire!
