GardenCity Public Schools Events Calendar For August 2012

 

Garden City PublicSchools issues this calendar of events each month to assist the media andcommunity in keeping track of events taking place at the schools. This calendar may not include all events.

 

Thursday, August 2

The Migrant EducationProgram will hold a backpack distribution event at Stevens Park in downtownGarden City from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

 

Saturday, August 4

Garden CityHigh School will hold an information meeting forparents detailing the implementation of the iPad initiative that will beginwith the 2012-13 school year.  The meeting will be held from 9:00 –10:30 a.m. in the commons area at GCHS, 2720 Buffalo Way Blvd.

 

Monday, August 6

The Garden City HighSchool Buffalo Yearbook Staff will host a yearbook pick-up/signing party onfrom 6:00-9:00 p.m. at WAMS Tropical Sno, 2410 N. Cherokee Road.  Pick-up your2012 GCHS yearbook and hang out to sign them with friends while enjoying adelicious snow cone.

Tuesday, August 7

The Kansas Highway Patrol will be inspecting school buses at the GardenCity Public Schools transportation department, 139 Clover Leaf, starting at6:00 a.m.  Every school bus must pass inspection before the district canuse the vehicles to transport students. 

 

Horace J.Good Middle  School enrollment will be 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Students new to the district need to go to the Educational SupportCenter, 1205 Fleming Street,to enroll.  For additional enrollment information, contact Horace J.Good Middle  School at 805-8100.

 

KennethHenderson Middle  Schoolenrollment will be 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Students new to the districtneed to go to the EducationalSupport Center,1205 Fleming Street,to enroll.  For additional enrollment information, contact Kenneth Henderson Middle Schoolat 805-8500.

 

Wednesday, August 8

New teacher inservices will begin on Wednesday, August 8th,and will wrap-up on Tuesday, August 14th.   The inserviceswill help new teachers get oriented to the school district for the start of the2012-13 school year.

There will be a teacher workday held during the day.  Teacherswill be getting ready for the 2012-13 school year.

Garden CityHigh School will hold a Meet the Buffs Night from7:00 – 8:30 p.m. in the main gymnasium at the school, 2720 Buffalo Way Blvd.  This is anopportunity for the high school athletes to meet and greet the community andfuture little buffs.

 

Saturday, August 18

Garden CityHigh School will hold a community tour of the newhigh school from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  The tour will showcase the newfacility located at 2720 Buffalo  Way Blvd. 

 

Monday, August 20

There will be a teacher inservice held during the day.

 

Tuesday, August 21

Teachershave a scheduled workday to get prepared for the beginning of the 2012-13school year. 

 

Wednesday, August 22

Thefirst day of school, with a half-day orientation for all students inkindergarten through fifth graders, seventh-graders, ninth-graders and allstudents new to Garden City Public Schools.  There will be no school inthe afternoon for a workday for teachers.

 

KennethHenderson Middle  School,2406 Fleming, will hold an open house from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.  Theopen house provides parents the opportunity to get familiar with the school,teachers, and the rooms that their children will be working in for the schoolyear.

 

Thursday, August 23

Thisis the first full day of school for Garden City Public Schools.  Allgrades will attend school for the 2012-13 school year. 

 

HoraceJ. GoodMiddle School, 1412 N. Main, will hold an open house from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. The open house provides parents the opportunity to get familiar with theschool, teachers, and the rooms that their children will be working in for theschool year.

 

Friday, August 24

USD457 will have a free childhood screening clinic for children 3 to 5 years ofage who are Garden City residents at GarfieldEarly ChildhoodCenter, 121 W. Walnut Street. If you are unable to keep an appointment the day of the screening, the districtasks that you call the Early Childhood Development Department at 805-7148.

 

Garden CityHigh School will hold a community tour of the newhigh school from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.  The tour will showcase the newfacility located at 2720 Buffalo  Way Blvd. 

 

The Garden City High School football team will hold a footballscrimmage at 7:00 p.m., at the football field located on the GCHS campus, 2720 Buffalo WayBlvd.  The brown and white scrimmage will help kick-off the footballseason.

 

Monday, August 27

EarlyChildhood classes for Garden City Public Schools begin for the 2012-2013 schoolyear.   All early childhood classes will be held at the Garfield Early ChildhoodCenter, 121 W. Walnut Street.

Friday, August 31

Therewill be a dedication ceremony of the new high school facility at 5:30p.m.  The ceremony will take place in the commons area at the high school,2720 Buffalo WayBlvd.

 

Monday, September 3

Districtoffices and facilities will be closed in observance of Labor Day. The schooldistrict will resume regular business hours and classes will be back in sessionon Tuesday, September 4, 2012.
