Leave a Legacy Foundation 10K/5K is set for October 6th, 2012 and Recruiting Teams

Garden City, KS – August 3, 2012 – The fifth annual Legacy 10K, Spirit 5K and Kids Fun Run will take place on Saturday, October 6th, 2012 at the Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City.  For more information about the race and to sign your team up please visit www.whodoyourunfor.org.

The Leave a Legacy Foundation was created in 2007 to honor the life of a dear friend, Laura, and to strengthen the cancer resources in southwest Kansas. Laura died at the tender age of 30 after a six year battle with brain cancer. She walked through it all with such beauty and grace, and always with a wink and a smile on her face!

Everyone has a “Laura” in their life – a mother, brother, grandpa, sister or best friend battling cancer.  Support them in their battle or remember their courageous fight by creating a team to walk or run in honor of that person. Sign your team up today at www.whodoyourunfor.org. Team Captains are asked to attend a planning meeting on Tuesday, August 28th at 7:00 pm at St. Catherine Hospital. For more information on creating a Team, contact Kari Mueller at 277-2621.

Our goal in 2012 is to raise $20,000! The foundation will donate that money toward the purchase of a digital mammography machine for St. Catherine Hospital and provide a FREE cancer screening (skin, prostate, breast, oral) the evening of November 13th. Early detection is key to treating all types of cancer. It is the hope of the foundation that by providing free screenings and assisting with the purchase of digital mammography equipment –lives can be saved in southwest Kansas.

The Leave a Legacy Foundation has provided St. Catherine Hospital the funds necessary to purchase life-saving equipment to diagnose and treat cancer patients. The foundation has gifted St. Catherine Hospital more than $60,000 to help make a difference in the services available to our community.

“Laura’s Touches” are given once a month to patients receiving chemo or radiation treatments at the Cancer Center to encourage them in their fight. Touches have included movie tickets to the Sequoyah Cinema, Chamber of Commerce Gift Certificates, fuel cards and cookies from Herb’s, just to name a few. The funds to continue Touches are generated through a silent auction held each year following the races. This year, the silent auction will take place Saturday afternoon at Samy’s Steakhouse, during the Sunflower Showdown Watch Party. Come cheer on the Wildcats or Jayhawks while supporting improved cancer care for your loved ones in southwest Kansas.
