HOUSTON (AP) – Jaime Garcia pitched seven strong innings last night in the St. Louis Cardinals’ 4-0 shutout of the Houston Astros. Jon Jay drove in a pair of runs for the Cardinals, who moved four-and-a-half games ahead of Milwaukee in the race for the second NL wild card spot. The Astros have lost 10 in a row to St. Louis.

DETROIT (AP) – Anibal Sanchez threw his first shutout since last September in the Detroit Tigers’ 2-0 win over the Kansas City Royals last night. The victory pulled the Tigers even with the Chicago White Sox with eight games to play. Bruce Chen took the loss after giving up two runs in six-plus innings.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs have placed cornerback Jacques Reeves on injured reserve. Reeves has been dealing with a hamstring issue that kept him out of Sunday’s overtime victory at New Orleans. The Chiefs take on San Diego this weekend.

DENVER (AP) – Wilin Rosario and Matt McBride both homered last night as the Colorado Rockies beat the Chicago Cubs 10-5 in a rain-shortened game. DJ LeMahieu and Chris Nelson each added three hits for the Rockies. Dave Sappelt and Starlin Castro went deep for the Cubs.
