Scott City Pounds Sacred Heart

Salina, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City Beavers scored their first touchdown on a five-play drive, all on the ground a minute forty-six into the game, and never looked back, as they pounded the Sacred Heart Knights 55-7 in the Regional round of the Class 3A State Playoffs at Salina Stadium.

Scott City drove the ball down the field with ease on their opening drive, as Tyler Hess ran to the left side for an eight-yard touchdown run with 10:14 left in the first quarter. Brett O’Neil’s extra point kick made it 7-0. After forcing Sacred Heart into a three-and-out, the Beavers took advantage of short field, as Dalton Buehler went up the middle of the Knight defense on fourth-and-inches from the 43 yard line at the 6:22 mark of the opening stanza, and O’Neil made it 14-0 Scott City. After a Trey O’Neil interception return to the Sacred Heart 11 yard line, Brett O’Neil found Drew Kite wide open in the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown pass, and Brett’s extra point made it 21-0 with 4:39 remaining in the first period.

The Beavers would put the game in doubt in the second quarter with 27 points. After a diving interception in the end zone by Brett O’Neil, Brett would find Dalton Buehler wide open for an 80-yard touchdown strike with 10:38 left before halftime to make it 27-0 Beavers, as the the two-point conversion failed. Four and a half minutes later, Tius Price found payturf on a 14-yard run with 6:08 left before intermission. An O’Neil PAT pushed the score to 34-0. Buehler would score his second rushing touchdown of the night on another fourth down play, this time from 39 yards out with 3:37 to go in the second quarter, as Brett O’Neil’s extra point made it 41-0. Scott City wasn’t done, as Brett Meyer came in and converted a third down pass for a 43-yard strike with 1:22 left before the break. An O’Neil extra point kick took the score to 48-0 Beavers at recess.

Due to a 45-plus point lead, the second half clock ran continuous. Scott City found the end zone on the final play of the third quarter on a five-yard touchdown run by Paco Banda. The extra point kick by Brett O’Neil made it 55-0 Beavers after three quarters.

Sacred Heart would find the end zone in the fourth quarter to close the scoring on the night. Nick Wuthnow found Tate Richards behind the Scott City secondary for a 72-yard scoring strike with 9:51 left in the game. Tymonny Bonilla tacked on the extra point to make the final 55-7.

Scott City was led by Brett O’Neil through the air, as he was four-of-five for 137 yards, with two scoring tosses. Dalton Buehler had 109 yards on only six carries with two touchdowns on the ground, and added 86 yards on two receptions with a touchdown. Tius Price had 73 yards on five carries, as the Beavers finished with 499 yards of total offense. Sacred Heart had 225 yards of total offense, including 167 through the air.

Scott City (11-0) hosts Garden Plain Friday night at 6 at Darner Field. The Owls are 11-0, after holding off rival Conway Springs for the second time this year 33-28 in Conway Springs Saturday night. Sacred Heart ends their season at 9-2.
