Lady Buffs Win Their First WAC Basketball Title and Buff Boys Lose Two in a Row

Garden City, KS (www.westernkansasnews.com) – For the first time in the history of the Garden City High School girls Basketball program, the Lady Buffs won their very first Western Athletic Conference last Friday with a come from behind victory over the Hays Lady Indians 47-43. The Lady Buffs are ranked No. 7 in the Kansas Coaches poll sporting a 16-3 record and 7-0 in the WAC with one game to go in a home meeting with Liberal on Tuesday. It was a struggle with the Lady Indians on their 2nd meeting of the season, as Garden City had to battle from behind for almost the entire game, but finally took the lead late in the 4th quarter and hit free throws down the stetech to get the win. The Lady Buffs were led in scoring by sophomore Jayme Bernbeck with 11 points, junior Taryn Tempel dropped in 10, senior Johna McClelland and junior point guard Jacksennie Tornero each added 8.

The Garden City Buffalo boys again struggled with the Hays Indians with a poor shooting performance and they were not able to handle the Indians big man sophomore Brady Werth in the paint as he ended the game with 19 points and 15 of those in the 2nd half. The Buffaloes lost for the 2nd time on the season to the Indians 45-36 and it was their 2nd straight loss in WAC play, after the 15 point loss to Dodge City last Tuesday. Sophomore Caleb Tramp was the only Buffalo player to reach double figures with 10 points, senior Austin Terpsta chipped in 8 and point guard Tristan Nanninga added 7. The Buffaloes now drop to 12-7 overall and 3-4 in Conference play with one game to go at home with Liberal.
