GCCC Women’s Basketball Honors All-American Tamara Jones-Audio

Garden City, KS (www.westernkansasnews.com) – Tamara Jones, the Prosser, Washington sophomore was selected an All-American Basketball player for Garden City Community College, the first All-American for the women in over 10 years. Jasmine Irving was the last to be chosen from the Lady Busters back in 2003.

In a special press conference ceremony Tuesday afternoon April 23rd, the Garden City Community College women’s Coaching staff, Adminstration, teammates and press gathered to honor and celebrate Jones for her outstanding two year career for the Lady Busters and the unveiling of the All-American banner with her name added. In her freshman year at GCCC Jones averaged 16 points per game and 9 rebounds and selected as the Jayhawk Conference Freshman of the year, selected to the All-Region VI team. Along with those honors she was a 3-time All-Conference player of the week pick and National player of the week one time, plus she
helped the Lady Busters to a 21-12 season and 2nd finish in the Jayhawk West and to the Region VI semi-final game for the first time in 9 years. Fourth year head Coach Alaura Sharp talks about what a special player Tamara Jones is and the qualities she brings every game.

In her sophomore campaign, Jones averaged a double-double of 20 points per game and 10 rebounds, she was the unanimous selection as the Jayhawk West player of the year and chosen All-Region VI. She was chosen as the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-American, NJCAA first team All-American, 4 time Jayhawk
Conference player of the week and 2-time National player ofnthe week. She produced a career high 36 points vs #16 New Mexico State on November 23rd, 2012 and became the all time leading scorer for the Lady Buster program on February 9th 2013 at Barton county scoring 1005 points but went on to finish the season with a school record high of 1,183 points. Jones helped lead the team in breaking 9 school records including the most wins in a regular season and being undefeated at home, with a marquee win over #1 Hutchinson at Perryman Athletic Complex.
