John A. Frey, 80 died Saturday, December 7, 2013 at the Satanta District Hospital in Satanta, Kansas. He was born April 14, 1933 in Garden City, Kansas the son of John Hubert & Roberta (Helsel) Frey. 

John has been a lifetime Haskell County resident. He graduated from Garden City High School in 1951. John served in the U. S. Navy from February 1952 to January 1956 during the Korean War. After the service, he returned to Haskell County. A lifetime farmer and stockman, John enjoyed a good livestock show. He promoted and serving as a leader for 4-H for many years. He helped kids with various 4-H projects and was known as “4-H Grandpa Frey” to his extended 4-H family. He was an avid sports fan. John was a member of the Pleasant Prairie Church of God. 

On May 15, 1952, John married Carolyn Ann Kent in Garden City. She survives. Other survivors include two sons George Frey of Garden City, Ks. and Justin & wife Lori Frey of Satanta, Ks.; three daughters KaAnn Graham of Hutchinson, Ks., Shawn & husband Harmon Plunkett of Syracuse, Ks., and Karan & husband Randy Long of Garden City, Ks.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a nephew Harlan & wife Samantha Comer of Overbrook, Ks.; and a grand-niece. John is preceded in death by his parents; his step-father Harlan Kinton; a son John “Sam” Frey; and a sister Gail Comer. 

Visitation: 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. 

Funeral Service: 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Pleasant Prairie Church of God in rural Haskell County with Pastor Danny Jackson officiating.

Interment: Valley View Cemetery in Garden City with military graveside rites conducted by the Garden City area Veterans. 

The family requests memorials to the Finney County 4-H Foundation or the Alzheimer’s Association both in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.
