Dr. Michael James Baughman
Dr. Michael James Baughman, 58, of Garden City died Friday, January 10, 2014 near his home from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident. Michael was born January 8, 1956 in Fort Benning, Georgia.
As a child, Michael lived with his family in various places throughout the United States. He also lived in Ontario, Canada and Germany for several years. Michael was a graduate of Salina Central High School, Kansas State University and the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He served his residency at the University of Kentucky School of Medicine, and later was chief resident. After moving to Garden City, he opened Sandhill Orthopedic and Sports Medicine in 1993, which he has successfully owned and operated since. Michael was also owner of Prairie View Home Health and a co-owner of Garden City Diagnostics Imaging. He was board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1992, Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and was Hand Fellow at Louisville, Kentucky School of Medicine. He was an active member of the American Arthroscopy Association of North America starting in 2000, and was certified by the American College of Sports Medicine in 2002. Dr. Baughman provided athletic training services for Garden City Community College and many area high schools. From 1988 to 1994, he served as a member of the Garden City Community College Endowment Association, he served on the GCCC Advisory Board for Nursing Education from 1990 to 1993, and has been GCCC team physician for all sports since 1988. He was also team physician for all Garden City High School sports. Michael was also a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City, member of the Sandhill Sage Rifle Club, the NRA, and Delta Upsilon Fraternity.
On May 1, 1993, he married Paulette M. Wasinger in Garden City. She survives. Other survivors include three daughters Margaret Baughman attending Kansas State University, Catriona Baughman of Garden City, and Shaun Baughman of Garden City; his parents Col. Larry & Marge (Marcotte) Baughman of Springfield, Mo.; three brothers Bruce & wife Joyce Baughman of Mahomet, Ill., Christopher Baughman of Springfield, Mo., and Dr. Jonathan & wife Loralee Baughman of Fordland, Mo.; five sisters Patricia A. Baughman of Ft. Worth, Tx., Linda Jean & husband Jack Ogle of Rockford, Ill., Janet M. Bell of South Elgin, Ill., Carol Adrienne Baughman of Des Moines, Ia., and Teresa E. & husband Gary Fessler of Ft. Worth, Tx.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City.
Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at St. Dominic Catholic Church with Ft. Reginald A. Urban as Celebrant.
Interment: Valley View Cemetery in Garden City.
Vigil Service and Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City.
