Holcomb stampedes Goodland

Calen Rupp returned two interceptions for touchdowns, as Holcomb forced six Goodland turnovers en route to the 55-14 win in the conference opener for both schools. In addition to his pick six double, Rupp scampered 12 yards for an offensive touchdown in a third quarter that saw the Longhorns stretch a 27-8 halftime lead to the final margin of 55-14. Blake Richmeier, Christian Merz and Dillon Williams each added rushing touchdowns and Trey Teeter threw TD passes to Braden Showalter and Brandon Stegman.

All the scoring came in the second and third quarters. The Longhorns struck first.  Blake Richmeier made a goal line interception and gave Holcomb the ball at its own 15. The Longhorns marched 85 yards, with Richmeier finishing it off with a 3-yard TD run. After Christian Merz scored from 8 yards out, Goodland got on the board as Kolt Trachsel hit Nolan Deeds from 12 yards out, cutting the score to 14-8. But in the final three minutes of the first half, Christian Merz returned two punts inside the Cowboy 15 yard line and the Longhorns took advantage of the short fields, scoring twice in two minutes to blow the game open.

Holcomb’s defense has now scored three touchdowns in the first two games. The unbeaten Longhorns will welcome another unbeaten on Friday night, as the Ulysses Tigers come to town for a GWAC showdown. Ulysses rolled over Hugoton 46-14, behind the running of Ian Rudzik, who now has 355 yards rushing in just two games.

You can catch all the Longhorn action on Friday night, beginning with the pregame show at 6:30, followed by the kickoff at 7:00.
