Garden City, KS (westernkansasnews.com)-If you think 3-peating is easy, just ask Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. Or Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers. Or better yet, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
So Garden City wrestling coach Carlos Prieto knows his two-time defending state champions have a massive target on their backs night in and night out.
“We understand we’re going to get everyone’s best shot,” he said. “We have to be up for that challenge.”
Dodge presented that very scenario on Tuesday night. A team, that’s rebuilding under Head Coach Lars Leuders, was one match from pulling off a stunning upset. But in the end, it was Tevin Briscoe’s pin of Jaden McRoberts in the 145 lb duel that finally put the Demons away.
“I think we were a little surprised by them,” Briscoe said. “They beat some of our guys that I didn’t expect them to.”
Garden City was also shorthanded, with Zach Finch out because of an injury. That gave Dylan Servis a forfeit victory at 170 pounds. Nick Killion also knocked off freshman Quinton LaPointe at 152 lbs.
