Lady Bronc Softball remains undefeated after sweep of Scott City

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On a sunny, yet breezy Tuesday afternoon at the Scott Rec Complex, Lakin and Scott City met up in a matchup in which the teams could have an outside chance of seeing each other come regionals. At the end of the day, the Lady Broncs remained undefeated, as they took down the Lady Beavers 13-5 and 14-10.

Scott City would not go down without a fight in each game. Lakin, however, put the pressure on early, scoring five runs in the first inning, only to see the Lady Beavers respond with two in the first and two in the third to pull to within 5-4 after three innings. The Lady Broncs slowed their opponents momentum, tacking on a run in the fourth and fifth innings, while opening the game up with a four run sixth to take a 11-5 lead, and added on two more in the seventh to make the final 13-5. Lakin outhit Scott City 12-3. Jhoryn Hernandez got the win, pitching all seven innings, surrendering five runs on three hits, despite walking nine. Mariah Watkins was 4-4 with six RBI, including a three-run home run in the sixth inning. Hernandez had four hits as well. Bre Smull took the loss for Scott City, striking out two and giving up 13 runs on 12 hits in the first game. The Lady Beavers committed five errors.

Game two had much the same feel early on as the first game. Lakin jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a half an inning. Scott City would respond with a run in the first and second to get to within 3-2. The Broncs pulled away in the third with four runs, highlighted by Kayla Swank’s three-run blast. Lakin would added two more runs in the fourth and four in the fifth to make it 13-3. When it looked like the game would finish in a run rule, the Lady Beavers battled back, scoring two in the fifth, one in the sixth and tried to make a furious rally in the seventh with four runs, but ended up four runs short at 14-10. Mariah Watkins got the win, going all seven innings, allowing 10 runs on 16 hits with a pair of strikeouts. Jhoryn Hernandez and Taryn Reed had four hits each for the Lady Broncs. Kaitlyn Roberts gave up 14 runs on 16 hits with a strikeout in seven innings, and took the loss. Bre Smull had three hits and drove in two runs, and Amanda Kough and Madison Orr each had a pair of RBI’s in game two. Ten different players for Scott City collected at least a hit in the second game.

Lakin improves to 12-0 on the year, and will host Hugoton next Tuesday. Scott City drops to 3-9 and visits Colby on Friday.
