Scott City ready for long trip to Clearwater

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It may be a long trip for Scott City today for their season opener at Clearwater, but it’s not the first time they’ve made a long voyage for a game. The 2015 Beavers and Indians have similar question marks heading into tonight’s 7 pm kickoff on what looks to be a warm evening.

For Scott City, a new quarterback will take the reigns in junior Bo Hess. Hess, who played in lopsided games a year ago, threw one touchdown pass and 127 yards as a sophomore. The Beavers will also have a fairly new cast of receivers, with senior Drake McRae who had significant playing time a year ago. The backfield returns a pair of 1,000 yard rushers in seniors Cooper Griffith and Wyatt Kropp, and the offensive line will have three new starters. On the defensive side, the Beavers return two linebackers in Griffith and Kropp, as the defense in 2014 surrendered an average of nine points a game.

Clearwater tasted the playoffs in 2014 for the first time in three years. They made it to the sectional round of the playoffs where they lost to Holcomb. At 4-7 a year ago, the Indians started 0-5, but had losses to Scott City, Mulvane and Wichita Collegiate, who all had deep playoff runs in that time frame. Clearwater has a bulk of their offensive and defensive lines returning, but will have a new cast of players in their receiving corp and a new quarterback, who has not attempted a varsity pass. The Indians scored only 16 points while giving up 26 a year ago.

Kickoff is at 7 pm from Clearwater High School. Pregame coverage begins at 6:30 on Mix 94 and online at https://www.westernkansasnews.com/mix94/. You can also listen on TuneIn Radio by searching Mix 94 and the KSKL app that’s free to download.
