Trending upward; Scott City splits Thursday triangular

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The last two-plus seasons have been rough for the Scott City Lady Beaver volleyball team. Playing their third set of matches in four days, Scott City took the court Thursday at home, with a triangular Colby and Hoxie. After the matches concluded, Hoxie went 2-0 on the day with a pair of two-set sweeps, Scott City went 1-1 and Colby was 0-2.

Scott City faced unbeaten Hoxie in their first match of the day. The undefeated and No. 5 ranked team in Class 1A, Division I led the entire first set, and eventually pulled away with a 25-18 win. In the second set, the Lady Beavers fought with the Lady Indians, but Hoxie pulled away about midway through the second set to take the 25-15 set two win and complete the sweep.

In the final match of the evening, both Scott City and Colby were looking to salvage at least one win on the day. The Lady Beavers jumped on the Lady Eagles early on, and led most of the way en route to the 25-20 first set win. Scott City scored the final four points of the first set for the victory. The next set would be more of a nail biter than the first, even though it didn’t show signs of it early on. After trailing 3-0, the Lady Beavers rallied off eight straight, and led by as many as nine at 15-6. Scott City would eventually lead 17-9 before the Lady Eagles made a furious rally. Colby scored 11 of the next 14 points to tie the set at 20. Scott City would push the score eventually to match point at 24-22. That’s when the Lady Eagles had one final surge to tie the set again at 24. The Lady Beavers would close the set and match with two more points to defeat Colby in the second set 26-24, giving them their first win over the Lady Eagles in three years. Scott City has now won two out of their last three matches.

Hoxie upended Colby in the second match of the day 25-21, 26-24, and they are now 9-0 on the season. Colby dropped to 4-3 on the year, while Scott City is now 2-6.

Scott City will compete in the Liberal Invitational on Saturday, with their first match at 9:30 against Hugoton, 10:30 against Dodge City, 11:30 versus Meade, and 1:30 against Colby.
