Longhorns cruise past Lakin

For the second week in a row, the Holcomb Longhorns scored on their first six offensive drives of the game, building a 35-0 1st quarter lead over the Lakin Broncs and cruising to a 42-13 win.

Holcomb opened the game with a six play, 80 yard drive, capped by Dillon Williams pulling in a 17 yard pass from Trey Teeter for Williams’ first receiving touchdown of the year. The Lakin Broncs have been haunted by mistakes all season and that continued on their first possession of the night, as on 4th down the snap sailed over the punter’s head and Michael Roth recovered in the end zone for Holcomb’s 2nd touchdown and a 15-0 lead. Lakin’s second possession ended with a punt and the Longhorns drove 56 yards in 4 plays, with Trey Teeter hitting Braden Showalter for a 13 yard TD, extending the lead to 21-0. Following another Bronc punt, Kaden Tichenor finished off a 6 play, 48 yard drive with a 1-yard TD run and the Longhorns led 28-0. On the ensuing kickoff, Lakin’s Dawson Shalberg fumbled and Holcomb recovered at the Lakin 34. Three plays later Dillon Williams charged in from 2 yards out and Holcomb led 35-0. The Broncs went 3-and-out for the 4th straight time and the Longhorns marched from their 36 to the end zone in 7 plays, with Brayden Goddard pushing in from a yard out.

By the 7:50 mark of the 2nd quarter, Holcomb led 42-0 and Coach Kent Teeter pulled his starters, going with back-ups the rest of the way. Lakin took advantage of the 2nd string defense, driving 65 yards in 13 plays to get on the board before halftime on a 25 yard TD pass from Hunter Kirby to Khai Hernandez. Holcomb led 42-6 at the break.

The two teams traded punts in the 2nd half, until Kirby hit Hernandez again, this time for a 61 yard TD in the 4th quarter. The final score was Holcomb 42 Lakin 13.

Lakin falls to 2-4 and will open district play at Cimarron. The Longhorns improve to 4-2 and will host Larned in the opening round of district play on Friday. You can hear all the action on AM 1030 KBUF, with pregame at 6:30 and kickoff at 7:00.
