Larry J. Burkhart, 68, died February 8, 2016 at his home in Dodge City. He was born on October 4, 1947 at Dodge City, the son of Victor and Agnes (Schlereth) Burkhart. 

Larry was a foreman for Gladden Excavating and APAC Kansas, Inc., until he retired in 2009. He was a fantastic baseball player in his younger days and a sports enthusiast all his life. Larry had a very big, caring heart and was always concerned about everyone else before himself. He was a lifetime resident of Dodge City. Larry loved to fish, hunt, go camping and held a special place in heart for the family farm. He was an avid reader of many genres; among his favorites were Stephen King and Louis L’Amour. As a lifelong history buff, Larry particularly enjoyed the Civil War era. 

He is survived by two daughters, Nikki Brooks and husband Aaron of Hutchinson; Dana Butler and husband Mike of Manhattan; two stepsons, Shawn Benton of Hutchinson; Keith Kubin of Colorado Springs, Colorado; four grandchildren; two brothers Darrell Burkhart and wife Beverly; Michael Burkhart and wife Mindy all of Dodge City; and several nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his father Victor Burkhart, mother Agnes Gladden and stepfather Kenneth Gladden and a stepdaughter Metissa Burkhart. 

Funeral service will be held at Swaim Funeral Home on Thursday, February 11, 2016 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Wesley Schawe presiding. Entombment will follow at Greencrest Mausoleum of Peace in Dodge City. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 from 12:00 to 8:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to Ford County Fire and EMS in care of the funeral home.
