Gary Lewis Akers died on April 9, 2016 in Dodge City, Kansas after a long and valiant fight against cancer. 

Gary was born March 4, 1944 in Lyons, Kansas to Charles and Leta Akers. He was the baby of the family with two older sisters, Maxine and Charlene. Gary graduated from Ponca City High School. He received his teaching degree from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, OK. He earned his masters in School Administration from Emporia State University. 

Gary had a long and successful career in Education with various jobs including history teacher, athletic director, High School Principal, and Superintendent of Schools in several cities across Oklahoma and Kansas. Gary was happily married to Lisa for 31 years. Gary had three sons: Matt, Newkirk, Oklahoma, Garett, Great Bend, Kansas, and Isaac, Spearville, Kansas. Gary also had three step-children: Kristi, Lenexa, Kansas, Craig, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Cami, Dodge City, Kansas. Gary had 2 granddaughters and 2 grandsons. 

Gary had several hobbies, including hunting, fishing, leather work, making jewelry, and was a Dr. Who fanatic. He was also quite the badminton player and won a championship in college. Gary was very competitive and had many a battle with his children on various card games and chess. Gary will be missed but we know he is in a better place now with no more suffering and pain. 

Private Services will be held at a later date. 

In Lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Circle of Hope or Hospice of the Prairie both in care of Ziegler Funeral Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave Dodge City, Kansas 67801.
