Lady Beaver softball gets school record with sweep of Hugoton

Hugoton, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City Lady Beaver softball team has been in foreign territory in 2016. Thursday, they not only clinched their second winning season in program history, they also tied the school record for most wins in a season at 12. Friday in Hugoton, Scott City was looking to continue their win streak, but also an opportunity at a 6-0 week, all on the road. Mission accomplished. The Lady Beavers took down Hugoton with wins of 12-3 and 16-5. 

Scott City 12, Hugoton 3, Game 1
After a slow start in the first game, the bats woke up in the middle of game one for the Beavers. Scott City was tied with Hugoton at two after three innings, and exploded for seven runs in the fourth to separate themselves. They tacked on a run in the fifth and two in the sixth, en route to the 12-3 win. The Lady Eagles added one more run in the fourth. Krystal Appel had four hits in the game for Scott City, while Nicole Latta had two hits and three RBI’s, and Nancy Wiebe collected two hits and drove in a pair of runs. The Lady Beavers outhit Hugoton 18-9 in the game. Kaitlyn Roberts picked up the win, allowing three runs on nine hits in seven innings of work to earn her seventh win of the year.

Both teams traded blows early on, but in the end, Scott City proved to be too much. The Lady Beavers led 4-3 after an inning and 5-3 after two, before putting up five runs in the third and fourth innings. They would tack on a run in the fifth inning. Jordan Miller, Bailey Latta, Kaitlyn Roberts Madison Orr would have two hits each, and have eight of the teams 11 hits in the finale. Nicole Latta also drove in two runs in the win. She helped her cause out in the circle, giving up five runs on 12 hits in five innings of work. The Lady Beavers had 13 walks in the game.

With the win, Scott City now has a 14-game winning streak, and are 14-2 on the year, 6-2 in GWAC play. The win breaks the school record of 12 wins in a season, set in 2011, when that team finished 12-11, and lost to Larned in the Regional Championship game. They will host Colby on Tuesday, beginning at 10 am, and play at Southwestern Heights on Thursday. Hugoton is 6-10 on the year, and 0-6 in league play, and will play at Ulysses on Tuesday before hosting Holcomb on Thursday.
