New to the top; Holcomb wins first GWAC Volleyball title

Ulysses, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In 2016, the top of the league finish was virtually flipped from 2015. Holcomb finished in a tie for fourth, while Scott City was sixth, and hadn’t won a GWAC match in three years. Saturday at Ulysses, the Holcomb Longhorns ran the table, as they went 5-0 to win their first-ever league title. Scott City’s second place finished was their highest since 2012. The defending champion Colby Lady Eagles finished in fourth.

The Longhorns were pushed in two of their matches, and both were at the end of a long day. They defeated Scott City and Ulysses in two sets, but both by two points. Scott City had two hard-fought matches to begin their day to earn second place. They went to three sets with Colby and Ulysses. Against the Tigers, each match went to extra points, thus being decided by two points. They would sweep Goodland, fall to Holcomb and defeat Hugoton in two sets.
