GCCC Women Win, Men Drop Six Point Game to Dodge

Garden City, KS (westernkansasnews.com) The Garden City Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams eek out a win and loss from their games Wednesday night with rival Dodge City.

The women survived shooting 17 percent at 4/24 from outside the arc and a six point performance from star post player DaRae Lewis to beat the Conquistadors 66-64. 

 

Women’s Highlights

Jessica Carrillo scored a season high 20, besting her 14 point performance from a week earlier at Allen and despite only pouring in six, Lewis grabbed 11 rebounds and had four of the team six block shots in the win. 

Alexus Johnson poured in a three pointer with four seconds left to bring Dodge within one, before Garden hit a free throw in the final two second to make it 66-64.  Johnson led all Dodge City scorers with 20 points by hitting 4-12 shots from 3.  Brittany Leonard closely followed with 13 points.

Garden improves to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the Jayhawk while Dodge City falls to 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the conference in being denied their second road win of the year.

It was a tough loss for the Garden City men’s basketball team as Dodge converted late and the Broncbusters went cold from the line in a 80-74 win for the Conquistadors.

Men’s Highlights

For Garden they let a lead of nine points slip away and needed a Jamar Gilbert three at the buzzer to take a one point lead into half.  Dodge City then pulled out a ten point lead a few minutes into the second half on a 23-12 run. 

Kourtney Ware was the catalyst for the Conquistador offense.  He hit 3 of the team’s four three pointers and Dodge City hit 18 of their 22 free throws including 14 of 15 free throws in the second half to cement the win.

Three different players for the Conquistadors (7-2, 4-2) poured in at least 20.  Ware had 24 on the night, Harris Brown scored 23 and Josh Boutte added 21. 

Jamar Gilbert finished with a game high 16 for the Broncbusters, Ben Howze finished with 13 and Aaron Ray 11.  The Conqs outscored the Broncbusters (8-2, 4-2) 45-38 in the second half.  Both teams averaged well over 90 points per game, but were held significantly under that total.

Garden City is back at it Saturday with a trip to the Sports Arena in Hutch.  Women will tip-off at 5:30, men at 7:30.
