Abilene wins 4A State Wrestling; Five area wrestlers medal

Salina, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–For the first time since 2003, the Abilene Cowboys claimed the 2017 Class 4A State Championship. Sitting in third place with 70 points after day one, Abilene won the tournament on the consolation side, putting nine wrestlers on the awards stand. It was a battle for second and third place teamwise, and it came down to the final match. Bonner Springs picked up the win at 220 pounds to take the second place trophy, while Andale fell to third place. 

Scott City made an impressive showing, going from 23rd place after the first day, and finished in seventh place, and were the highest-placing team among the GWAC teams. Holcomb finished in 31st, while Ulysses was 34th. 

The Beavers had four wrestlers and came home with three medalists. Justus McDaniel was 4th at 113, while Jarret Jurgens and Wyatt Hayes were third place finishers at 152 and 160 respectively. Holcomb and Ulysses had one medalist apiece. Chance Rodriguez was third at 170 and Austin Ochoa was fourth at 220. Jurgens and Rodriguez are three-time medalists.
