Scott City hosts Hugoton for Homecoming GWAC tilt

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Two teams who have not faced a common opponent square off tonight at Darner Field in Scott City in a Great West Activities Conference battle. Hugoton will be making its second straight road trip, while Scott City will return home for the first time in two weeks in a 7 pm start.

Hugoton is 1-2 on the year, and 1-1 in GWAC play, after a 14-12 loss at Colby last Friday night. The Eagles have lost by a combined 10 points this season, with an eight-point loss to Lakin in triple overtime in week one. This year, they have only surrendered one touchdown in the second half, and that came against Ulysses two weeks ago. Hugoton is a team that features only seven seniors this year, and put up around 176 yards of offense a contest. The Eagles have been outscored by an average of 18-15, with their lone win coming against Ulysses 14-13 at home two weeks ago.

Scott City returns home after a 34-6 road win at Cimarron last Friday night to improve to 3-0 on the season. The Beavers scored a touchdown in each of the first three quarters, before opening the game up with 13 fourth quarter points. It was the first time Scott City won the turnover battle, intercepting the Bluejays four times and recovering a fumble. They scored 20 points off turnovers, despite having the ball for a little over 15 minutes in the game. The Beavers outgained Cimarron 259-212 in the game. It was the first time that an opponent had over 200 yards of offense in three games. So far, they have outscored opponents by an average of 29-9.

Scott City has won the last seven meetings in the series by an average margin of 38-4. Last year, the Beavers scored 28 second half points on their way to a 35-7 win.

Homecoming festivities will start at around 6:30 at Darner Field. Queen candidates are Brenda Aguirre, Katie McGonagle and Makaela Stevens. King candidates are Kevin Herndon, Jarret Jurgens and Jeff Wick.

Kickoff is set for 7 pm, with pregame beginning at 6:30 on Mix 94.5. You can also listen online at www.westernkansasnews.com/mix 94, TuneIn Radio, or on the free Mix 94.5 app.
