Wichita County working on bicycle and pedestrian plan

Leoti, KS(westernkansasnews.com) Back in 2016 Wichita County received a Pathways to Healthy Kansas grant. The grant was initially for $100,000.

Monday night the county held a meeting to discuss the master bicycle and pedestrian plan for Leoti. The plan has five chapters and explains what modes of transportation people can use to help people increase their physical activity. The plan looks specifically at making it easier to walk and bike in Leoti.

The plan shows priority projects that can be started including walking trails, sidewalk improvements, painting and signage to make it safer for cyclists.

As part of the grant Wichita county agreed to make healthy changes across seven different pathways. Those pathways are community policy, community and resident well being, restaurants, food retail, healthcare, worksites and schools.

The grant is initially the coordination grant. It’s also the planning stage and assessment of what types of policies and environmental changes can be made to support healthy living.
