Garden City, KS(westernkansasnews.com) The International Rescue Committee office in Garden City will close in September.

According to the Garden City Telegram at least part of the reason for the closing is the decreasing number of refugee arrivals. President Donald Trump recently reduced the refugee admission limit from 50,000 to 45,000 in fiscal year 2018.

The IRC issued the statement below on the closing:

“I can confirm that the Garden City office of the International Rescue Committee will close in September 2018, due to updated guidance from the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) at the US State Department, as well as low arrival numbers brought on by misguided policies that will impact US integration efforts. In the next several months, the IRC in Garden City will do due diligence to ensure the clients IRC serves are supported through this transition, and ensure the best possible integration support.

We are grateful for the tremendous community support that IRC has received since opening in 2014, and are humbled by the community’s enthusiasm to ensure the world’s most vulnerable have a chance to make better lives for their families in Garden City. The IRC will continue to resettle refugee families in Wichita.”

Based on current trends, the IRC projects 21,292 refugees will be resettled in the United States in Fiscal Year 2018, far below the Trump administration’s 45,000 refugee cap.
