Scott City Softball opens season with sweep of Goodland

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It was a good start to the 2018 season for the Scott City Lady Beaver softball team on Thursday, facing off against the Goodland Cowgirls to begin the season. Facing the Cowgirls at home for the first time in three years, the Lady Beavers took advantage of many opportunities against the young Goodland team. Scott City won the first game 18-8 and the second game 13-3, with both games called in the fifth inning due to the 10-run rule.

The Lady Beavers wasted little time getting off to a great start in the first game of the season. Scott City sent 15 to bat in the first inning, scoring 11 runs in the inning. Little did they know that the Cowgirls would fight back. Goodland responded with six runs in the second inning and added two more in the third to pull to within 11-8. In the bottom of the third inning, the Lady Beavers took over the game for good. They added a run in the third, had a four-run fourth and closed the game with two runs in the fifth to secure the win. Kaitlyn Roberts drove in the winning run in the first game on a fielders choice that scored Shelby Patton. Macie Price went 3-4 and drove in six runs. Roberts went five innings, giving up eight runs, three earned, on seven hits, with five strikeouts. Patton and Roberts also drove in three runs. Jessie Duell drove in four runs for Goodland. Brooke Drennan took the loss, allowed 18 runs, seven earned, on 12 hits and struck out four.

Scott City 13, Goodland 3, Game 2
Goodland would score the first run of the game in top of the first, and that would be their only lead of the day. Scott City took advantage of three Cowgirl errors score five runs, to lead 5-1 after the first inning. After the Cowgirls pulled to within 5-2 after an inning and a half, the Lady Beavers added a run in the second and the third to lead 7-2. In the fourth inning, Scott City would blow the game open with three runs, and closed the game out with three runs to complete the sweep with a 13-3 win. It was Gabby Martinez who closed the game out with an RBI groundout. Martinez would drive in four runs in the second game, while Kaitlyn Wolkensdorfer drove in two more runs. Lyndi Rumford picked up the win, allowing three runs, two earned on four hits with two strikeouts in five innings pitched. Brooke Drennan pitched the first inning to take the loss, and allowed five runs on four hits. Anna Gutierrez pitched the final 3 2/3 innings, giving up eight runs, four earned on six hits. Kayleigh McCombs had a three-hit game for Goodland, as they ended up with seven errors in the second game.

Scott City is 2-0 overall and 2-0 in GWAC play. They will host Liberal on Friday, April 6. Goodland drops to 0-4 overall, and 0-2 in the GWAC. The Cowgirls will host Garden City on Tuesday.
