Buffs and Red Demons baseball split doubleheader

Garden City, KS(westernkansasnews.com) Garden City and Dodge City baseball split their doubleheader Friday. The Buffaloes cruised in game one 10-0 in five innings, while the Red Demons battled back in the second game to win 8-7 in eight innings.

Game one

Garden City(4-10, 2-4) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. The Buffaloes added a run in the second and three runs in the third inning to make it 6-0. It was 7-0 going into the bottom of the fifth then Cooper Thayer ended the game the with a two run single and an error by third baseman Omar Don Juan brought home another run to make it 10-0.

Thayer also got the win on the mound pitching 4.2 innings and giving up just two hits, he also had a big day at the plate 2-3 with three RBIs. Austin Waetzig also went 2-3 with 2 RBIs and Andrew Kreutzer was 1-1 with three runs and an RBI. Roman Rodriguez got the loss for Dodge City(6-8, 1-5) pitching three innings giving up six runs and six hit. The Red Demons committed four errors.

Game two

The second game of the afternoon was a back and forth affair. Garden City would build a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning and it was 6-3 going into the top of the sixth then Dodge rallied. The Red Demons loaded the bases with no outs Omar Don Juan then drew a walk, Cody Ibarra and Noah Sowers had RBI singles to tie the game 6-6. The buffaloes responded in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI triple from David Artega to make it 7-6. In the top of the seventh Dodge City freshman Alden Knedler would single and eventually score on a passed ball to tie the game at 7. In the top of the eighth inning for the Red Demons Kaden Riekenberg singled with two outs and then scored on an RBI single from Noah Sowers that would eventually serve as the game winner.

Adrian Mendoza got the win for Dodge City coming in for relief for Sowers he pitched the final three innings and gave up just one run on two hits. At the plate Sowers led the way going 4-4 with four singles and two RBIs. Mendoza also went 2-4 with an RBI. David Artega led Garden City 4-4 with a triple, three singles and 2 RBIs.

Up next Garden City will host Liberal on May 1. Dodge City will host Heights May 4.
