Garden City High School music students rank at State

Garden City High School music students participated in the Kansas High School Activities Association State 6A Solo and Ensemble Contest on Saturday, April 28th, held in Topeka, Kansas.  Students from band, choir, and orchestra participated in the event.  The students that participated in the state competition advanced from regional competition held in Dodge City on Saturday, April 14, 2018.   Students were rated from “I” to “V”, with a “I” rating being the best possible rating to receive.

The school took 10 band members to perform at the competition. The soloist receiving a “I” rating was Colten May, euphonium.  The soloists receiving a “II” rating include: Caleb Tewell, horn; Shelby Irsik, clarinet; Oscar Hernandez, tenor saxophone; Orion Craig, trombone; Brenan Hoke, flute; Jessica Pammenter, flute; Jesus Alvarado, flute; Marilu Rodriguez-Melendez, flute; and Veronica Martinez, flute.

The school choir had five soloists compete.  Senior, Jhamel Transfiguracion received a Superior ‘I’ rating. Seniors, Kim Loya, Elena Lopez, and Andy Oyler received Excellent ‘II’ rating. Freshman, Jescie Bribiesca received a “III” rating.

The school had eight orchestra students compete at the state contest.  Soloists receiving a “I” rating include:  Oswaldo Mezquita, cello solo; Kyler Bennett, cello solo; Jayson Resendiz, bass solo;  Rayenah Bergstrom, viola solo; Jade Valdez, violin solo; Lucas Torres-Ruiz, violin solo; and Emily Arrieta, violin solo.  Tia Dunsworth, received a II rating on her bass solo.
