Lady Demon softball wins WAC with sweep of Liberal

Liberal, KS(westernkansasnews.com) The Dodge City softball team claimed the WAC Championship Thursday after sweeping Liberal 15-2 and 22-6. It’s the Lady Demons first WAC softball championship since 2009.

Game one

The Lady Demons(15-5, 7-1) started slow with Liberal jumping to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Dodge City then tied the game in the second and added six runs in the third, five in the fourth and three in the fifth to win by run rule 15-2.

Raemie Lopp(7-3) got the win on the mound. Maddie Kalscheur led the way at the plate going 2-3 with six RBI. Grace Ruehle was 3-4 with three RBI.

Game two

Dodge City started fast in the second game scoring two runs in the first and eight in the second to jump out to a 10-2 lead. Dodge City then finished the game in the fourth putting up 12 runs for a 22-6 win.

Raegan Lopp(8-2) got the win. Shaylyn Turner went 2-3 with four RBI and two doubles. Caroline Williams was 2-4 with 3 RBI.  All nine Dodge City batters had at least one RBI.

The Lady Demons finish the regular season in a four way tie for second place with Garden City, Washburn Rural and Northwest in the 6A West regionals. Depending on the tiebreaker Dodge City could host a regional next week. The tiebreaker will be done Saturday morning.
