A’s seize second place with win over Liberal

Liberal, KS(westernkansasnews.com) The Dodge City A’s beat the Liberal Bee Jays 3-1 Wednesday night to take sole possession of second place in the Jayhawk League.

The Bee Jays only offense came in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single from Peyton Johnson, putting Liberal in front 1-0. The A’s tied the game in the fourth inning with an RBI single by Casey Opitz.

The game remained tied until the top of the ninth inning. Kyle Cullen led off with a walk and then stole second, Jordan Vujovich laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Cullen to third with one out. Adam Hollar was then hit by a pitch and stole second to put runners on second and third. Owen Jansen followed with a two-run single to put Dodge City ahead 3-1.

Cody White retired the first two Bee Jays batters in the bottom of the ninth the hit Montgomery and Fulford to put runners on first and second, a passed ball then allowed them to advance to second and third with two outs. White then got Paul to groundout to first to end the game.

In his first start with the A’s(1-0) White pitched a complete game allowing just two hits and one unearned run. Dayton Cook was 3-5 at the plate with a double, two singles and a run scored. In just his second game with the A’s Opitz went 2-3 with a double, single and RBI.

The win puts the A’s(18-11) in second place a game in front of Liberal(17-12). Dodge City has won six in a row and eight of their last ten. They start a four game series with El Dorado Friday night pregame at 7:15 p.m on 95.5 FM and swksradio.com.
