A’s top El Dorado in shortened game

Dodge City, KS(westernkansasnews.com) The Dodge City A’s beat the El Dorado Broncos 6-4 in 4 1/2 innings Friday night after the game was ended by storms in the area.

The A’s got off to a hot start scoring four runs with two outs in the bottom of the first thanks to back-to-back two-run singles by Casey Opitz and Jordan Vujovich to take a 4-0 lead. The Broncos responded in the second inning scoring three runs on an RBI single by Ethan Payne and a two-run double by Jordan Anstandig to cut the deficit to 4-3.

Carlos Arrellano(3) then led off the bottom of the second for Dodge City with a solo homerun to stretch the lead to 5-3. In the top of the fourth inning with the bases loaded Anthony Villegas walked El Dorado’s Caleb Littlejim with the bases loaded to make it a 5-4 game. In the bottom half Dayton Cook delivered an RBI single to stretch the lead to 6-4.

After the top of the fifth inning the game was delayed for over an hour and then called final. Anthony Villegas(2-2) got the win for the A’s pitching five innings and allowing four runs on seven hits. Opitz led Dodge City at the plate going 1-1 with a single, walk and two RBI. Vujovich was 1-2 with a double and two RBI and Dayton Cook was 2-3 with two singles, an RBI and a run scored.

The A’s(19-11) have won seven in a row and are 1.5 games ahead of Liberal for second place in the Jayhawk League. They’ll take on El Dorado again on Saturday in a double header with the first game at 6 p.m.
