Expectations remain high for Scott City football team

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–If Scott City would have a slogan for the 2018 season, it would more than likely be “Unfinished Business”. The Beavers have made the playoffs for 12 straight years, and were one game away from playing for a state championship in 2017, falling to GWAC rival Holcomb.  Expectations remain high and why not? They haven’t had a sub-.500 record since 1986.

Scott City returns around seven starters on offense and six on defense from a team that went 11-1 last year. Through two practices this year, 59 kids comprise of the Beaver football squad. This year is the first year of no two-a-days. Instead, one practice takes place, that can not go over three hours. This is a new rule put in to place across the country that not only affects high school football, but also in the college ranks.

The 2018 schedule will also see some significant changes for the Beavers. They will be dropping back to Class 3A with the new classification realignment passed in 2017. It also means there will be six-team districts in the classification, and eight total districts. While Scott City is only one of two GWAC schools that is playing every team in the league, there will not be a league champion this year. The Beavers 38-2 over the first eight years of the league, winning six league titles and finishing second in the other two years. Added to the schedule will be Beloit and Russell, both from the North Central Activities Association, and both are in Scott City’s district. Scott City played Russell in districts in 2012 and 2013, and face Beloit both of those years in the sub-state round of the playoffs. This year’s coaching staff remains the same. Jim Turner is in his third year as the head coach, while the assistants are Landon Frank, Brian Gentry, Dakota Hayes, Michael McEachern and Todd Richardson.
