Lady Beavers volleyball sweeps Oakley triangular

Oakley, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Just 11 days removed from their first day of practice, the Scott City Lady Beaver volleyball team headed to Oakley for a triangular for their first competition of the year. A team that lost four quality seniors a year ago saw many new faces take the court. The newcomers filled in nicely, and helped the Lady Beavers put together two sweeps in a 25-14, 25-17 win over Wallace County, and finished off the day with a 25-12, 25-14 win over Oakley to start 2-0 for the third straight year.

In their first match of the day, Scott City trailed in their first set to the Lady Wildcats of Wallace County 3-0. It took the Lady Beavers to get going, but when they did, they showed they were the better team on the court. Trailing 5-2, Scott City went on a 10-2 run to go up 12-7 midway through the first set. Wallace County pulled to within 12-10, but then the Lady Beavers dominated the rest of the set, using an 11-2 run to go up 23-12, before eventually winning 25-14. In set two, Scott City trailed briefly, but went on a 9-1 run to lead 10-3. The Lady Wildcats were able to score six straight midway through the second set to pull to within 14-11, but that was the closest they got the rest of the way. The Lady Beavers inched away eventually to pick up a 25-17 win.

In match two of the day, Scott City was never really threatened in the first set. After trailing early 3-2, a 16-2 run by the Lady Beavers never let Oakley get in to any rhymthm. Scott City would lead by as many as 13 on a pair of occasions, before ending up with the 13-point margin in set one 25-12. The second set saw the Lady Beavers jump out to an early 10-3 lead, only to see the Lady Plainsmen slowly inch their way back in to the set. Oakley was able to close the gap at 14-10, but Scott City used an 8-2 run, and never looked back to take the set and match with a 25-14 victory.

Oakley rallied in both sets against Wallace County in the first match of the day, winning 25-22, 27-25.

Scott City will hit the road on Tuesday, September 4 with a dual against GWAC foe Ulysses.
