Campus topples Red Demons in opener

Dodge City, KS(westernkansasnews.com) The Haysville Campus Colts got off to a blistering start and never looked back Friday night beating Dodge City 47-9 in the season opener.

Sam Wise returned the opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown and a two-point conversion pass to Quinton Hicks made it 8-0 Campus. On the Red Demons first play first scrimmage Jaiel Johnson fumbled a carry that gave the ball back to the Colts at the Dodge 35, three plays later Evan Kruse hit Tyler Kahmann for a 5-yard touchdown, making the score 14-0 just 1:09 into the game.

The Dodge City defense kept them in the game holding Campus scoreless for the rest of the first half. Alexis Alvarez hit a 26-yard field goal late in the first quarter to make the score 14-3, that score held until the second half.

The Red Demons turned the ball over six times on Friday night, three interceptions, two fumbles and a blocked punt. The Campus defense scored two touchdowns on the turnovers Kahmann blocked and returned a punt five yards for a touchdown and Eli Combs intercepted a John Johnson pass that he returned 20 yards for a touchdown.

The Dodge City defense surrendered just 227 yards of offense, but were put in difficult spots throughout the night. The Red Demon offense could only muster 143 total yards. The lone Dodge City touchdown came late in the fourth quarter on a blocked punt by Josh Bertholf that Sam Mead recovered in the end zone.

“The inability to run the football led to a lot of things, it was the worst imaginable start to a football game that I’ve ever been a part of, the biggest thing is our morale I told the kids we’ve got film early in the morning we’ll evaluate that film and then we’re going to be over it,” said Dodge City Coach Dave Foster.

Dodge City is back in action Sept. 7 at Salina South at 7 p.m.
