Scott City and Holcomb face off

Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–For the fifth time in the past three years, Scott City and Holcomb will meet up on the gridiron. And for the fourth time in the last six games in the series, the game is in Holcomb. Tonight, the two GWAC rivals will battle at the scene of the 2017 Class 4A, DII Sub-State Championship game in a 7 pm kickoff.

Scott City had a dominating performance last Friday in their 35-0 win at Hugoton in a game that was called with 1:59 left in the third quarter, due to lightning. The Beavers scored on four of their five possessions in the first half to build a 28-0 lead, and never looked back. Defensively, Scott City forced two turnovers and limited the Eagles to only 41 yards of offense and one first down. Offensively, the Beavers put up 343 yards, with over 3oo on the ground. Wyatt Hayes had over 200 yards on the ground and three scores to lead Scott City in the win.

Holcomb returned only two starters from last year’s team, but that didn’t slow them down in a 34-12 win over the Goodland Cowboys last Friday night at Cowboy Stadium. The Longhorns led 21-0 at the break, en route to the win. Peyton Ortner rushed for three touchdowns, and Jayson Lamber had 110 yards and two touchdowns. Holcomb outgained the Cowboys 381-167, and had 289 yards on the gound. The Longhorns forced two turnovers in the win, as they won their 12th straight game, dating back to last year.

Scott City leads the all-time series 14-4, despite Holcomb winning three of the last four games in the series. The Beavers won the first game in Scott City 23-14, while the Longhorns won the last meeting 34-13.

Kickoff is at 7 pm at Holcomb High School, with a 6:30 pregame on Mix 94.5 for the Scott City Broadcast, and 1030 AM KBUF for the Holcomb Broadcast.
