Scott City hosts Goodland in district opener

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Yes, it’s week three, and the Scott City Beavers will be starting district play tonight. Under the new district format, this will be the first of five district games for Scott City, as they play host to the Goodland Cowboys at the new-look Darner Field in their home opener.

Goodland enters the game with an 0-2 record, their worst start since 2009. Last Friday night, the Cowboys ran into an inspired Ulysses ballclub and lost 62-14 at Maxwell Field in Ulysses. This year’s team has plenty of new faces on both sides of the ball, after losing 99% of their offense from a year ago. Goodland has averaged nearly 200 yards of offense and 13 points a game through  their first two games, while allowing an average of 48 pionts and 415 yards per game. Sophomore Leyton Cure is their quarterback, who has accounted for all four of the teams touchdowns this year, with three of them through the air, while throwing for 242 yards. Senior Joe Mann is their leading rusher coming in to tonight. Defensively, the Cowboys are led by Chris Berls who has 17 tackles coming into tonight.

Scott City is 2-0 on the year, after a 24-0 win at Holcomb last Friday night. In the game, they scored on their first four possessions of the half, including 21 first quarter points. The Beavers have been solid on defense through the first two games, surrendering a combined 96 yards to Holcomb and Hugoton. They put up 337 yards of offense against the Longhorns, with 238 coming on the ground, while giving up 54. This year, senior Wyatt Hayes has rushed for nearly 400 yards and five touchdowns, as the Beavers have averaged 350 yards of offense, with 280 coming on the ground. Defensivly, Scott City is led by Kyle Sherwood with 13 tackles and two sacks, while Cale Goodman has 13 tackles as well. Scott City’s two shutouts to start the season are the most sincd 1984, when they shut out their first six opponents.

Scott City leads the all-time series 35-11, including a 12-game winning streak in the series vs the Cowboys. Last year, the Beavers won 28-0 in Goodland.
