Scott City travels to Beloit for a district showdown

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Wednesday’s practices for both Scott City and Beloit were more than likely more crammed than normal. The mid afternoon announcement moved the game up 24 hours, due to the possiblity of severe weather and heavy rains in the Beloit area, and now set up a District 8 showdown on a Thursday between two tradition-rich schools.

Scott City clinched their 32nd consecutive non-losing season on Friday in a 56-7 rout of the Russell Broncos at Darner Field. The Beavers scored on their first six possessions, leading 28-7 after the first quarter and 42-7 by halftime. It was the first time that Scott City had been scored on all season. They rolled up a season-high 516  yards of offense, with nearly 400 coming on the ground, while surrendering 168. Wyatt Hayes went over the 200-yard mark for the second time this season, and leads the rushing attack of Scott City that has rushed for around 270 yards a game. Hayes has 13 rushing scores and over 700 yards on the season. The Beavers are averaging 44.6 points a game, and have surrendered an average of 86 yards per game and just over a point through five games.

Beloit got back on the winning track last Friday night in Goodland with a 52-14 win. The Trojans led 22-7 after the first quarter and 36-14 by halftime. They put up 414 yards of offense with 379 on the ground. Tate Ahlvers rushed 32 times for 264 yards and five touchdowns in the win in their first-ever meeting with the Cowboys. Ahlvers leads the Beloit offense this year with 439 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, while Vincent Palen has four receiving touchdowns and 193 receiving yards. The Trojans average 355 yards of offense per game, with 219 coming on the ground, and score an average of 37 points a game, while yielding just under 20. They have been hit with the injury bug, as two of their top players are out for the year with injuries. Starting quarterback Hudson Gray threw for 482 yards in three games, and had six touchdowns, while Zach Meier rushed for 228 yards in two games with three touchdowns.

Tonight’s game is the fourth meeting all-time, with Beloit leading the series 2-1. Scott City won in Beloit 42-26 in 2012, and the Trojans won 36-13 in Scott City in 2013. Those games were in the Sub-State round of the Class 3A Playoffs. The Trojans also won 16-0 over the Beavers in the season opener in 1975.
