Conqs women win, men lose to Neosho

DODGE CITY, KAN. — The Dodge City Conquistadors women’s basketball team kept their winning streak alive when they defeated Neosho, 87-76 in overtime. The men dropped their game to the Panthers, 77-68.

The Conq women have now won five straight games and have increased their record to 7-3 and more importantly 2-0 in Jayhawk Conference play.

The Conqs got off to a hot start and led 23-19 after the first quarter, but the Panthers weren’t going to give up at that point. Neosho would battle back and take a lead in the second quarter on the Conqs, before DCCC took a 41-39 lead into halftime.

Dodge City was able to build an even bigger lead before the Panthers would slowly start to crawl back in. The Conqs would lead 63-55 going into the final quarter. The Panthers outscored the Conqs 17-9 in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime tied at 72.

The Conqs dominated the 5-minute overtime period. Neosho got up in overtime, but the Conqs would hold the Panthers scoreless the final 3:35 and would go on a 14-0 run to end the game and seal the win. Four Conqs scored in double figures led by Haleigh Hill’s 20 points and 2 rebounds.

The Dodge City men hung with the Panthers of Neosho for a majority of the first half, in fact the Conqs led 32-30 at the break.

Dodge City did a great job of sharing the basketball, as nine players scored at least one point in the first half and no player had more than six points at the break.

The second half was a completely different story. The Panthers came out and used a 10-0 run to get some breathing room away from the Conqs. DCCC pulled within five, but another Neosho room would create more separation between the two teams, as Neosho would go on to win by nine.
