Red Demons split season opener on road

JUNCTION CITY, KAN. — The Dodge City High School Red Demons opened up the 2018-2019 basketball season on Friday night inside of Shenk Gymnasium in Junction City. The Lady Demons picked up a convincing 55-22 win, while the Red Demon boys fell 87-71.

The Red Demons got off to a hot start and led 12-4 over the Blue Jays after the first quarter. That lead would only grow as the evening went on. The Red Demons led 28-11 at halftime and that was just the beginning.

Dodge City held the Blue Jays scoreless the entire third quarter and would outscore the Jays 17-0 in those eight minutes. The defense did a great job of making the Blue Jays take tough shots and had a hand in the face of every Blue Jay that would try to attempt a shot.

Junction City wouldn’t get a basket in the second half until the 4:05 mark in the fourth quarter. The Red Demons would go on to win by 33 points in the season opener. DCHS shot 51 percent from the field and was led in scoring by Kisa Unruh’s 14 points and 7 rebounds.

The DCHS boys team tried to avenge a loss to the Blue Jays they suffered last season after getting off to a 13-0 run to begin the game. Junction City had other answers, as they were the ones getting off to a hot start before the Red Demons knew what hit them.

The Blue Jays led 23-16 after the first quarter and would continue the hot shooting from outside, as well as the ability to drive and use their speed to an advantage. Junction City would take a 45-35 lead into the halftime break.

The Red Demons would try to come out and cut into the deficit they had early in the third quarter, but they were unable to do so. The Blue Jays instead extended the lead to 21 at one point and led 68-50 as we went to the fourth quarter.

Dodge City would actually outscore the Blue Jays in the fourth quarter, but already had too big of a deficit to overcome that and win. Noah Sowers led all scorers with 24 points 7 rebounds and 9 assists in his senior season debut.
