GARDEN CITY, Kan. — The Board of Trustees for Garden City Community College unanimously voted to name Dr. Ryan Ruda the President of the institution in a regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, February 12, after an hour-long executive session. The Board and Dr. Ruda will now enter into contract negotiations.

In addition to hearing an introduction of new employees, a report from the President, a report from the Student Government Association (SGA) and a report from Faculty Senate, the Board discussed and voted for a temporary suspension of the open comments from the public.  The Board also received a presentation from Faculty on the Student Learning and Assessment Team (SLAT), and met in executive session on matters where no binding action was taken.

Suspension of Public Comment

The Board voted three to two to remove the open comments from the public segment from the agenda for the February 12th Board meeting.  The decision was made to indefinitely remove the segment from upcoming meetings until a time determined by the Board.   The college released a statement to the public regarding the avenues available for public interaction and comment during future Board meetings.

Student Learning and Assessment Team

The Student Learning and Assessment Team (SLAT) presented information to the Board regarding the information gathering processes currently being used at GCCC to evaluate the effectiveness of instruction and student outcomes.  Faculty member and SLAT team member, Brian McCallum, presented a sample Written Communication Value Rubric and Curriculum Map with Student Learning Outcomes (SLO).  The Board was given the opportunity to ask questions about the processes of SLAT.
