The Garden City Buffaloes had a tough task opening up at home against the #1 team in Class 6A and the defending state champion Derby Panthers.

Unlike last year’s game, Garden City held strong in the first quarter but could not capitalize on an early Derby fumble in Derby territory. Panther senior quarterback Grant Adler was the star of the first half rushing 11 times for 188 yards and three touchdowns. Adler also threw for 93 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. Derby scored 41 unanswered points in the first half and went into the halftime break up 41-0.

Garden City would not score until an 80 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Alexavier Rodriguez to end the third quarter.

Garden City scored 13 unanswered points in the fourth on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Carlos Acosta to Erik Dominguez and a two-yard touchdown run by Josh Janas.

Garden City falls to 0-1 on the season and will take on Valley Center on the road next Friday.
