Red Demons roll to opening week win

HAYSVILLE, Kan. — The Dodge City Red Demon football team opened the 2019 season with a convincing 34-12 victory at Colt Stadium against the Campus Colts.

The Red Demons took a 7-0 lead on a 31-yard touchdown pass from Beau Foster to Matt Friess with 8:09 to go in the opening quarter, the first drive for the Dodge City offense of the season. That was just the start to Foster’s big night.

The senior quarterback would go on to throw two more touchdown passes and rush for two in the victory. Foster finished 8-of-14 passing for 190 yards and three scores, while rushing for 121 yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns. He’d throw two touchdown receptions to Friess and one to senior receiver John Johnson.

Friess also had a big night for the Red Demon offense with four catches for 110 yards and two scoring receptions and also a 46-yard kickoff return to set the Dodge City offense up with great field position.

The offensive line paved the way for 455 yards of total offense on 52 plays, averaging nearly nine yards per play. The Red Demons also racked up 20 first downs, 13 more than the Colts were able to gain.

It wasn’t just the Red Demon offense getting the job done on the field, as the Dodge City defense forced three turnovers, all of them being interceptions thrown to junior linebacker Alden Knedler. Knedler’s three interceptions is a new single-game record in program history.

The defense was flying to the ball and shut down the flexbone offense that the Colts ran, as they gained just 68 yards on 32 carries, less than three yards per carry. The only strong spot in the Colts’ offense was the passing ability, as quarterback Nathan Bowen threw for 248 yards and two touchdowns.

The Red Demons will return to Memorial Stadium for the first time in 2019 on Friday night, as they’ll play host to the Salina South Cougars (0-1) with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and pregame coverage beginning at 6:30 p.m. on 98.1 FM, Z98.1 Mobile App or westernkansasnews.com/z98 with Phil Stephenson and the Voice of the Red Demons, Sean Boston on the call.
