SCHS Tennis second at Phillipsburg, volleyball wins two in Colby

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–As we get to the halfway point of the season, the Scott City fall sports teams continue to have a good season. On Tuesday, the Lady Beaver tennis team finished in second place at the Phillipsburg Invitational, while the volleyball team continued their strong start to the season with a pair of three-set wins in Colby on Thursday against Colby and Hoxie.

At Phillipsburg on Tuesday, the girls tennis team finished second as a team at the Phillipsburg Invitational. Concordia just edged Scott City for the team title with 22 points, while the Lady Beavers had 19. Abbie LeBeau picked up another tournament win at No. 1 Singles. Both doubles teams placed second, with the No. 1 Doubles team of Cynthia Gonzalez/Lanae Haupt and the No. 2 Doubles team with Gisselle Aguirre/Marisela Chavez. At No. 2 Singles, Madison Westergard was third. Scott City will host their own invitational on Monday on the brand new courts at Scott City Middle School.

On Thursday at Colby, Scott City had a pair of rematches against Colby and Hoxie. In their previous meetings with the two teams, the Lady Beavers won in three sets. Once again, each of their matchups would go to three sets. Against Colby, Scott City would win a close battle with the Lady Eagles in the first set 25-23, only to see Colby take the second set 25-18. In the third set, Scott City built up a lead, as Colby tried to make a late rally, but fell short to the Lady Beavers 26-24. In a quick turnaround, Scott City struggled early in the match with Hoxie, losing 25-15 in the first set. They would lead a majority of the second set, taking it 25-21, and would cruise to the victory in the third set 25-11. Scott City is now 12-2 on the year, and will have a week off before playing a dual at LaCrosse next Thursday.
