Afterschool Program Shows Increases In Reading Scores

An independent matched comparison study of Garden City, Kansas elementary students shows that those attending the Reading Roadmap afterschool programs had higher reading scores than their non-attending peers, all according to school tests.  There will be a press conference to discuss the scores and the impact of the program at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 15, in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming Street.

The Garden City study was conducted by Mustafa Yilmaz, a Lawrence, Kansas-based Educator and Data Analyst, and reviewed by Mark Dynarski of Pembleton Research, former Director of the Institute of Education Sciences’ What Works Clearinghouse. 

The Kansas Reading Roadmap program seeks to align proven reading models to achieve greater student achievement.  The program looks at both the school day and out of school time to identify opportunities for reading improvement.

Five elementary schools are involved with the program in the district.  The schools include: Abe Hubert Elementary School, Buffalo Jones Elementary School, Florence Wilson Elementary School, Gertrude Walker Elementary School, and Victor Ornelas Elementary School.
