Giraffe Calf Name Reveal & More Fun at the Lee Richardson Zoo

Lee Richardson Zoo

Staff at the Lee Richardson Zoo are excited to share that the giraffe calf born on the morning of Friday, August 7th, 2020 is a healthy baby boy!  Video of the reveal can be found on the zoo’s Facebook page, website, and YouTube channel.  We will continue celebrating the calf’s birth as well as his dad’s birthday this Saturday, August 15th, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with both online and in-person giraffe themed activities.

Juani, the calf’s father, helped choose a name for his son thanks to a unique enrichment device created by zoo staff.  Video of Juani selecting a name will be shared online at 10:00 a.m. this Saturday.  The name will also be announced during the celebration on Saturday.

Guests can join zoo staff at the giraffe’s habitat for a show and tell featuring giraffe themed items, a scavenger hunt through the zoo for giraffe silhouettes, and to sign a card to be shared with our staff and giraffes.  At 10:30, a giraffe themed children’s book will be read aloud, and take-home craft kits will be handed out while supplies last. Think of this event as an 11th birthday party for Juani and a shower for Garden City’s biggest newborn! However, instead of gifts or a registry, guests are invited to give a freewill donation online or in-person to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation to support conservation and management of giraffe populations in the wild.

Guests joining us at the zoo are encouraged to wear masks and practice the recommended social distancing.
