Harry Cherry, age 75, passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2012 at the St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas.  He was born on August 20, 1936 in Greeley County, Kansas, the son of Floyd and Dorinda Cherry.  A resident of Garden City, Kansas since the early 1970’s, he was a construction worker.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, and One Brother – Donald Cherry.

Lawrence R. Dowell, age 73, of Ulysses, Kansas died Sunday, February 19, 2012 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. He was born April 6, 1938 in Ensign, Kansas, the son of Carl and Mable (Smith) Dowell.

Larry married Marie Hageman on September 3, 1960 in Millington, Tennessee. They moved to Ulysses in March 1973. Larry was an owner of Ross Heating and Air Conditioning for 24 years and then continued working as a technician. He enjoyed going antiquing and refinishing furniture; and was an accomplished woodworker. Larry had a passion for making beef jerky, enjoyed bingo, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandson. Larry served on many boards for the community of Ulysses and attended Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Marie of the home; son, Randy Dowell of Ulysses, Kansas; daughter, Terry Crosby of Ulysses, Kansas; brothers, William Dowell, of Dodge City, Kansas, Wayne Dowell of Blue Ridge, Georgia, Kenny Dowell of Dawsonville, Georgia, Leroy Dowell of Gainesville, Georgia, Bob Dowell of Georgia; and sister Ruth Smith of Sacramento, California; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Larry is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Floyd; sisters, Leona, Nadine, Bonnie; and granddaughter, Victoria Dowell.

Mary Alice Hernandez

Mary Alice Hernandez, age 48, passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2012 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas.  She was born on November 25, 1963 in Garden City, Kansas, the daughter of Guy B. & Mary Mildred Gardner Moore.  A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 2002 moving from Leoti, Kansas, she was a Licensed Registered Nurse.

She was a member of United Methodist Church of Garden City, Kansas.

Gail W. Laughlin

Gail W. Laughlin, 92 passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2012 at the Garden Terrace Nursing Home in Aurora, Colorado. He was born May 11, 1919 in Washburn (McDonald County) Missouri the son of Luther & Elsie (Wade) Laughlin. He moved with his family to Garden City, Ks. In 1929 at the age of 9, and he spent the next 80 years in Garden City. He moved to Westminster, Colorado in February 2009 to be near his son and daughter. Gail married Ida Mae Dotts in Garden City in 1939 and to this 50 year union was born one daughter, Sharon (Laughlin) Summers and one son, Danny Laughlin. Ida passed away in May 1989 and Gail married Anna Plummer in December 1990. Anna passed away in March 2005.

Gail is survived by a daughter Sharon & husband Dave Summers of Colorado Springs, Co.; a son Danny & wife Janice Laughlin of Westminster, Co.; 8 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Opal Partin and Irene Flynn; and a brother Neal Laughlin.

Gail was drafted into the U.S. Army in February 1944. After 17 weeks of basic training at Spartanburg, S.C. he sailed on the SS Argentina to England. He was then trucked to an army base in England and then sailed on an English ship through the English Channel and landed at Omaha Beach Head. He was a rifleman and a flamethrower and his job was clean up. He spent time in France, Belgium, Luxemburg, Germany and was at the Belgium Bulge – last stand for the Germans – when he was seriously injured on November 6, 1944. He was awarded the Purple Heart on November 20, 1944. He also received a Good Conduct Medal with 3 Battle Stars, World War II Victory Ribbon with 2 Bronze Service Stars and a Combat Infantry Badge. After many months of rehabilitation in a hospital in El Paso, Tx. He was discharged from the Army in December 1945. When he returned to Garden City he went to work for Selover & DeCamp Tire Service, later named U.S. Royal Tire Service. He started working for the Garden City Co-op in 1963 and retired from the Co-op in 1983. After retirement, he worked part time as an inspector for the Kansas State Grain Association.

Gail was an active volunteer for many years in several organizations. He delivered “Meals on Wheels”, worked in the coffee shop at Garden Valley Retirement Village, was a member of the Red Cross 5 Gallon Club for his donation of blood, and was a member of the Garden City RSVP. A long-time member of the Assembly of God Church in Garden City, Gail was active as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Secretary-Treasurer of the Sunday School Department, involved in Missions, drove the church van to pick up senior citizens, and was involved with the Royal Rangers. He enjoyed his years as a member of the Good Sam RV Club.

 

David A. Miller

David A. Miller, age 51, of Wichita, Kansas formerly of Ulysses, Kansas died Friday, February 17, 2012 at the Galichia Heart Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. He was born December 31, 1960 in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Lawrence R. and Geraldine M. (Longtin) Miller.

David grew up in Ulysses and graduated from Ulysses High School. He worked as a mechanic and was also an accomplished carpenter. David was very strong willed with a good sense of humor and enjoyed joking with everyone he met. David never met a stranger; and after you met him you were soon considered a friend. David loved spending time with his family; which was the most important part of his life. David was a member of Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses.

He is survived by two sons, Cory Miller and fiancé Lindsay Huber of Holcomb, Kansas, Kenny Miller and wife Samantha of Ulysses, Kansas; four brothers, Bob Jones and wife Ann of Mims, Florida, Mike Miller and wife Teresa of Clinton, Oklahoma, Pat Miller and wife Laura of Liberal, Kansas, Tony Miller and wife Cynthia of Ulysses, Kansas; two sisters, Judy Nedom and husband Bob of Ulysses, Kansas, Connie Lewis and husband Bill of Liberal, Kansas; and six grandchildren, Natalie, Elizabeth, Riley, Kaylee, Brooklyn and K’cie.

David is preceded in death by his parents; niece, Devin Parks; and many aunts and uncles.

Rocky Allen Mitchell

Rocky Allen Mitchell age 62, died Sunday, February 19, 2012 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. He was born January 5, 1950 at Garden City, Kansas the son of Clarence L. & Clara L. (Woods) Mitchell.

Rocky attended grade school in Dalton, Nebraska and moved back to Garden City when he was 12 years old and attended Abe Hubert Junior High and graduated from Garden City High School in 1969. He served in the U.S. Army and did a tour in Viet Nam. After his discharge he served in the Army Reserves for 21 ½ years and was in Desert Storm under the Big Red 1 Army. Rocky married Susan J. Motley on March 10, 1975 at Garden City. He was a lifelong truck driver and hauled any kind of freight around the country. He enjoyed facebook, cowboy and military movies; especially John Wayne. Rocky was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Garden City, and John J. Haskell V.F.W. Post # 2279 of Garden City.

Survivors include his wife, Susan J. Mitchell of the home; four sons, Steven Mitchell of Belle Fourche, South Dakota, Jeff Mitchell of Ponca, Nebraska, James Mitchell of Garden City, Kansas, Daniel Mitchell of Garden City, Kansas; two daughters, Dawn Anderson of Woodbridge, Virginia, Angela Fanning of Heber Springs, Arkansas;and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Richard; and brother, James.

Walter E. Stapleton

Dodge City – Walter E. Stapleton, 91, died February 18, 2012, at Hays Medical Center, Hays.

He was born September 5, 1920, in Plains, Colorado, the son of Edward and Mary Schlereth Stapleton.  He was a farmer/rancher/mechanic.  He served in the United States Army in the European Theater WWII.

He belonged to Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Knights of Columbus, V.F.W., American Legion, DAV, Hodgeman and Ford County Historical Societies past township member and trustee for South Roscoe township, a 4-H leader and a past school board member.

On October 28, 1942, he married Maxine Faulkner at Dodge City.  She survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, George E. and wife Mindy Stapleton, Dodge City, Robert L. and wife Terri Stapleton, Cimarron; three daughters, Shirley Y. and husband Leonard Hoskinson, Dodge city, Patricia L. and husband Duane Van Dolah, Garden City, Deanna M. and husband Roger Myers, Larned; one brother, Henry Stapleton, Dodge City; nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; three step grandchildren, nine step great grandchildren, four step great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Harold E. Stapleton; three brothers, Elmer, Alex, and George; three sisters, Lucille Abscheer, Aileen Lee, and Ida Kreger.

Vigil will be at 7p.m. Wednesday, February 22, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Jetmore.  Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dodge City, with Father Ted Skalsky presiding.  Visitation will be from 9a.m. to 8p.m. Tuesday and 9a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Beckwith Funeral Home, Jetmore.  Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery West, Dodge City, with Military Rites conducted by Howard Gotschall Post #1714 V.F.W.
