AP Election News Minute 11/3

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Republican Sam Brownback easily won the governor's race during yesterday's election. He's already said the state needs to reduce spending, and now abortion foes anticipate new restrictions on clinics will become law. The changes comes after nearly two decades of governors who vetoed anti-abortion legislation.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - Kansas voters are retaining all four state Supreme Court justices who were on this year's ballot. Yesterday's results keep alive a streak of successful retentions of state Supreme Court justices dating back to 1960.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Kansas' 4th Congressional District is remaining in the GOP column, with last night's victory by Republican businessman Mike Pompeo. He defeated Democratic state House member Raj Goyle in the race for the Wichita-area seat that was represented for years by Republican Congressman Todd Tiahrt.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Voters shoved state government to the right during yesterday's election as Republicans swept all statewide offices in Kansas. The GOP also managed to oust an incumbent Democratic attorney general, secretary of state and state treasurer.

He replaces Republican Rep. Jerry Moran, who was elected to the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Sam Brownback. Brownback did not seek re-election to the Senate and was elected governor. Huelskamp was declared the winner over Democrat Alan Jilka, the former mayor of Salina.
The 1st District covers 69 counties of western and central Kansas. Huelskamp is a fiscal and social conservative who campaigned on repealing the federal health care law and shrinking the federal government.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Republican Sam Brownback is returning home to be governor of Kansas after 16 years in Washington. Brownback has defeated Democratic state Sen. Tom Holland in his bid to reclaim the office that Democrats held the past eight years. Trailing Brownback and Holland were Libertarian Andrew Gray and the Reform Party's Ken Cannon. Brownback replaces Gov. Mark Parkinson, who assumed the job in 2009 when then-Gov. Kathleen Sebelius resigned to become secretary of U.S. Health and Human Services.
Brownback will take office in January and will work with the Republican-controlled Legislature to revive the state's lagging economy and shaky budget status.

AP Calls Senate Race in Kansas for Moran

By the Associated Press

November 2 (8:01pm)

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Republican Congressman Jerry Moran has won the U.S. Senate race in Kansas, easily beating his novice Democratic opponent. Moran had a big advantage over first-time candidate Lisa Johnston in the GOP-leaning state. A Democrat hasn't won a Senate election in Kansas since 1932. The 56-year-old Moran, from Hays, also easily tapped into many voters' discontent with President Barack Obama and Democrats over the economy and the federal health care law. Johnston, a 39-year-old assistant dean at Baker University in Baldwin City, positioned herself as a fresh face with a new perspective. But Moran's conservative voting record seemed in tune with Kansas voters. He will replace U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback, a Republican who left the Senate to run for governor.
